NCPI Note March 2024

Some much-needed relief for Namibians as headline annual inflation decelerates for the third consecutive month, down to 4.5% from 5.0% in Feb ‘24 and 7.2% in Mar ’23. The four heaviest-weighing baskets, constituting 72.0% of the total inflation basket, all saw decelerations relative to the previous month – most notably Transport as the National Energy Fund absorbed the entirety of substantial under-recoveries in Mar and Feb ’24. Relative to Mar ‘23, only Housing & Utilities, Recreation & Culture, and Hotels, Cafés & Restaurants recorded increases as rent recorded its largest increase since 2018 (even after the downward ‘adjustment’ in Feb ‘24 due to delays in price adjustments by real estate data providers), and tourism-related baskets increased in response and anticipation of normalised tourism figures.
